What is Threads?: Introducing the New Social Media App by Meta

Instagram announced a new social media app called Threads for those who like to create a thread of discussion through their posts. On Threads, you can now share small write-ups of up to 500 characters and people can reply/share your thread and spread your word.

Threads has a conversation-like layout which makes it more intuitive and an easy-to-use experience for the users.

How is it different from Instagram?

Instagram focuses on visual content like images and videos, while Threads is focussing more on conversations. It motivates one to keep a conversation going in a linear form.

Exploring the Features of Threads

1. Your Profile and Types

It consists of the basic information a profile has on social media, like:

a. Your name

b. User ID

c. Display picture

d. Bio

e. Attached link

f. Number of followers, etc.

Your Threads and Replies also appear here. There are two types of Profiles that you can create on Threads: Public & Private. A public profile will be open for anyone to explore, read, follow, comment, repost, reply, etc. A private profile restricts this access to only allowed followers. You can choose this according to your comfort, from the settings tab.

2. Starting a Thread

You can strike a conversation by using the New Thread button and writing down your thoughts. People can like, reply, repost, quote or even share your Thread as a story or post to feed externally on Instagram, Twitter, or on other apps.

3. Like, Reply, Repost, Quote

Just like other social media platforms, Threads equips you with a great number of features to facilitate user interaction. We are well acquainted with how the Like and Reply buttons work on social media. It is just the same for Threads. But, it is important to understand the difference between Repost and Quote. If you wish to share some interesting Threads, without adding your own comment, you may simply Repost it to your profile. Reposting a Thread from another profile adds it to your profile with the tag You Reposted. And, upon Quoting a Thread, you can share your own comments with the shared Thread and it will be saved to your profile. Your comments will be the main Thread and the other one will appear as quoted text below it.

4. Interlinked Apps with Threads

Instagram is directly linked to Threads. In fact, upon registration, you are NOT required to create a new user ID on Threads.

Your Instagram ID gets transferred easily to Threads and both, your Instagram and Threads accounts get linked together.

Another interesting fact, if you are a verified Instagram user, you do not need to re-apply for the verification tick on your Threads profile.

Your tick automatically appears on your Threads account. Also, your Instagram followers can be found and followed on Threads very easily, with a simple button, Follow accounts from Instagram. This button fetches all your IG followers on Threads, whether they have yet registered with Threads or not.

If users join Threads a little later, they will still receive your follow request from before.

5. Sharing Your Profile with Others

It is pretty easy to share your Threads profile link with people, with the help of the Share Profile button on your profile home.

Twitter Rival?

People have mixed opinions that Threads has been launched as a rival to Twitter because of the ongoing Twitter Chaos caused after Elon Musk took over; and the changes in the app that have followed thereafter. It might or might not be true.

Musk vs Zuckerberg

"The vision for Threads is to create an option and friendly public space for conversation. We hope to take what Instagram does best and create a new experience around text, ideas, and discussing what's on your mind." - Mark Zuckerberg

Zuckerberg, in simple terms, calls Threads a 'text-based conversation app'. Well, in that case, it will not be wrong to say that Meta now has its own Twitter. What is your opinion on it? Write to us on our Instagram post comments.

Why Use Threads?

Meta claims that upon reaching a good number of users, this app will be occupied with diverse communities conversing with people from their own niche, which is a good use reason to register with this app and find your interest topics. Another reason, with such hype built up around it, staying up-to-date is a must for which, exploring this app is not a bad idea at all.
