Introduction

One Piece is one of the most popular anime that has been going on for more than two decades. It is based on a very popular manga series of the same name written by Eichiro Oda. How popular are we talking about? Well, One Piece is the best-selling comic book series of all time. Selling over 500 million copies worldwide. Last year July 22, 2023, marked the 25th anniversary of the manga.

Synopsis

The story follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy, a young boy from an island called ‘Dawn Island’. His dream is to become a pirate king. Now what is a pirate king? Pirate king is a title given to a legendary pirate Gold Roger. A man who had acquired wealth, fame, and power. He had left the greatest treasure in the world ‘One Piece’ somewhere in the grand line. During the time of his execution, he smiles as he says "My wealth and treasures? If you want it, I'll let you have it...search for it! I left all of it at that place." With these words, he inspired countless people all around the world to become pirates to find the ‘One Piece’ and claim the title of Pirate King. The world had entered the age of pirates.

Luffy, our protagonist, wants to find the treasure not just to become pirate king but to fulfill a dream that has yet to be revealed. The person who inspired him to become a pirate, however, was not Gold Roger. It was a pirate called Shanks, who was a former member of Roger pirates. He entrusts Luffy with his hat and tells him that they will meet again when Luffy becomes a great pirate.

Characters

For a series that has been going on for more than two decades, it has many well-written characters each with their own unique story and personality. The major characters include Luffy and ‘Nakama’ who are the crewmates of his pirate group ‘Straw Hat Pirates’ or ‘Mugiwara no ichimi’. Let's talk about some of the popular and interesting characters in one piece.

1. Monkey D. Luffy

The protagonist of One Piece, who aims to become a pirate king. We already talked about him so there isn’t any need to talk more about him.

2. Roronoa Zoro

Arguably the only character that can rival the popularity of Luffy in One Piece, Zoro is the first crewmate that Luffy recruited. He has a strong sense of responsibility and is considered to be the most loyal among his crewmates. He is the one who makes sure Luffy doesn’t lose face as the captain of their ship by reminding Luffy of his position and the difficult choices he has to make. This side becomes most clear in the ‘Enies lobby’ arc of One Piece.

Zoro is a swordsman, with a unique 3 sword style that is called ‘Santoryu’. He wants to become the greatest swordsman in the world. A promise that he made with his late childhood friend Kuina.

3. Nami

Nami is a navigator in Luffy's crew. She was a cat burglar who stole from pirates. She hated pirates so very much because Arlong, a pirate, had killed her adoptive mother Bellmare. But the most painful thing was that Nami had to work for Arlong because her map-making and navigation skills were acknowledged even by Arlong. She made a deal with Arlong that she would buy her island back from Arlong, which he had seized, by collecting 100,000,000 berries. This hate for pirates made her steal from Luffy as well but in the end, Luffy saved her island and she joined his crew.

4. Vinsmoke Sanji

He is a cook in Mugiwara no Ichimi and fights using kicks. He has a chivalrous nature and never hurts a woman. He and Zoro however don’t get along well and there is a fight between them many times. His dream is to find ‘All Blue’ an ocean where fish from all seas are present.

5. Other characters

There are so many characters in one piece that including all of them would make this too long. Ussop, Chopper, Niko Robin, Jimbei, and Brook are all members of the Mugiwara crew. There are also many interesting side characters like Coby, a young boy who wishes to become a marine admiral. The villains in one piece are just as iconic. Crocodile, Donquixote Doflamngo, Katakuri, Big Mom, Kaido, Marshall D. Teach aka Blackbeard are some of the most popular and well-written villains.

Power system

One Piece has introduced many power systems but the most prominent ones are Devil Fruits, Haki, and Rokushiki.

1. Devil fruit

They are mysterious fruits that give the eater unique abilities. The only drawback is that the devil fruit eaters cannot swim. They are believed to be hated by the sea. Devil fruits, while all are unique, are classified into 3 types. Logia, Paramecia and Zoan.

2. Haki

Haki is a life force. Only trained individuals can use and utilize Haki. Haki is also of three types:

a. Kenbunshoku Haki

This Haki gives a sixth sense to users. They get the ability to feel the strength, emotions, and presence of other people. Kenbunshoku Haki can also make a person see very far away. The strong users of this Haki can predict the moves of opponents but that’s not all. Some people like Katakuri and Luffy can even see a few seconds into the future.

b. Bushoshoku haki

This Haki makes the body of the user very strong. It also makes attacks more potent. This Haki is required for defeating logia users’ intangible bodies. Its advanced application makes a coating of armament Haki at some distance and even advanced is being able to manipulate Haki in an enemy.

c. Haoshoku Haki

This Haki is unique. Only those with the quality of king can use this Haki. No matter how much one trains this will not appear if they don't have the quality of king. This Haki makes the willpower of the user dominate the weak. The weak will not be able to maintain consciousness in its presence. Advanced level of this Haki increases the strength of users.

3. Rokushiki

Rokushiki is a martial arts style that includes six basic techniques and a secret seventh technique. It's also known as the Six Powers. It is the main combat style for World Government Agents. It requires intense training.

What makes one piece special?

One Piece is special because of its world-building and character arcs. The world in one piece has 5 oceans. East blue, west blue, north blue, south blue, and Grand line. The oceans are divided by the red line. A large ring-shaped continent that encircles the entire planet.

The Grand Line is an ocean perpendicular to the Red Line. One cannot enter frand line from any of the blue seas. This is because of the calm belt, a ring that is present on both sides of the Grand Line and no wind flows through it and is filled with sea kings. Because of this, the only way to enter the Grand Line is through a reverse mountain. However, marines have found a way to enter the grand line through the calm belt.

Grand Line is a place of unusual weather and is filled with many notorious pirates. After the first half of the grand line, comes the new world. New World has weather conditions way worse than Grand Line. It is home to the world's most dangerous and notorious pirates. There are 4 emperors who ruled the New World. They are the world's strongest pirate groups.

This world-building and well-written characters is what makes One Piece so special.
